Internal – Western Smelters
In this role you will be responsible for but not limited to:
- Overseeing all Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) management requirements specific to the Rustenburg Smelter during care and maintenance phase.
- Ensuring robust compliance with South African HSEQ legislation (OHSA, MHS Act, NEMA) and the Glencore HSEC standards and protocols.
- Implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving HSEQ management systems and site risk controls.
- Leading incident investigation, root cause analysis, hazard identification, job safety analysis, and HSEQ audits for care and maintenance activities.
- Managing occupational health, hygiene, and exposure monitoring programs (e.g., dust, noise, gases, heat), ensuring the health and safety of all personnel and contractors onsite.
- Leading contractor and service provider compliance management relating to HSEQ obligations.
- Coordinating site environmental, emergency response, and sustainability programs in line with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 standards.
- Engaging with internal departments, shared services, and third-party bodies regarding audits, reporting, and compliance monitoring.
- Compiling and presenting accurate HSEQ reports and performance statistics, analysing data and identifying trends for continuous improvement.
- Driving operational discipline and championing a strong safety culture in alignment with Glencore SafeWork 2.0 protocols.
- Participating in emergency preparedness and response processes, including training, drills, and crisis management.
- Managing and mentoring a team of HSEQ professionals, promoting competency development and best practices across the site.
About you:
- Degree/Diploma in Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ), Engineering, Chemical, Metallurgical or equivalent.
- In-depth knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 standards and South African HSEQ legislation.
- Min 3 years' experience in HSEQ management within mining, smelting or heavy industry, including at least 3–5 years in a supervisory position.
- Strong track record in incident investigation, auditing, and compliance.
- Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, coaching, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and digital HSEQ management systems (ISO systems, SAP EHS, or equivalent).
- Excellent analytical, reporting, communication, and change management skills.
- High levels of integrity, accountability, and adaptability, with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a hazardous industrial environment.
