Job DescriptionAn exciting opportunity is available for an experienced HME Superintendent to join our Engineering and Maintenance team.
Reporting to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager, you will lead HME Maintenance and be accountable for the safe, reliable and cost-effective performance of one of Hail Creek’s largest and most diverse HME asset portfolios.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Providing visible safety leadership and ensuring maintenance activities comply with legislative requirements, critical controls and site standards.
- Delivering planned and corrective maintenance, breakdown response, component replacements and shutdowns to agreed safety, availability, reliability, quality, schedule and cost outcomes.
- Working closely with Planning, Engineering and Reliability, Mining and other stakeholders to manage priorities, job readiness, backlog, defects, equipment condition and life-cycle risks.
- Improving asset health and whole-of-life performance through effective maintenance strategies, condition monitoring, failure investigation and defect elimination.
- Managing by the numbers to identify recurring losses, make informed decisions and deliver measurable improvements in availability, reliability, work quality, productivity and cost.
- Challenging the status quo, encouraging ideas from all levels and simplifying processes to embed safer and more efficient ways of working.
- Applying commercial judgement and a business-owner mentality when managing budgets, labour, contractors, components and strategic spares.
- Creating ownership within the team, delivering agreed commitments and personally confirming and validating that actions have achieved the intended outcome.

About the Candidate
The successful candidate will bring the following skills and experience to the role:
- A relevant mechanical trade or engineering qualification.
- Significant leadership experience in mobile equipment maintenance within open-cut mining or a comparable heavy-industry environment.
- Experience managing a large and diverse haulage and ancillary fleet across multiple OEMs and equipment life-cycle stages.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and develop supervisors, employees and contractors in a performance-driven environment.
- Strong knowledge of maintenance execution, work management, defect management, shutdowns, component planning and asset reliability.
- Experience using maintenance and performance data to identify losses, challenge existing practices and deliver sustainable improvement.
- Sound commercial capability, including budget management, forecasting, contractor management and cost control.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage competing operational priorities.
- A thorough understanding of risk management, safe work practices and critical control management.
- Relevant Queensland coal-mining competencies, or the ability to obtain them, and a current Australian driver’s licence.
You will be a practical and visible leader who creates ownership, acts with integrity, makes timely decisions and follows through on commitments.

We are only a one and quarter hour drive from the beautiful Mackay hinterland and a two- and half-hour drive from Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands and have a diverse group of people at our operation commuting from multiple locations in Queensland such as Rockhampton and Townsville, to name a few. Commercial Flight Support is available per written request for senior staff members and above, for flights from Mackay (MKY) to Brisbane (BNE) return.
