Job Description

Reporting directly to the Drill & Blast Supervisor, you will play a key role in supporting safe and efficient blasting operations. This hands-on role involves loading and firing blast holes, monitoring compliance with site procedures and legislative requirements, and ensuring all blasting activities are conducted safely and effectively. You will also assist in monitoring the mining environment and inspecting post-drill and post-blast areas to ensure safety standards are maintained.

About the Role

The Support Shotfirer is responsible for the safe handling, preparation, and initiation of explosives under the direction of an appointed Shotfirer. The role supports the delivery of safe, compliant, and productive blasting outcomes while adhering to industry best practice, company standards, and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and execute blasting operations in line with approved blasting designs and site plans.
• Manage, transport, store, and prepare explosives and detonators safely according to regulatory standards.
• Set up blast holes, charge explosives, connect initiation systems, and conduct controlled detonations.
• Conduct pre-blast safety checks, including clearing and securing the blast area, and notify personnel.
• Monitor blast outcomes, assess effectiveness, and report on blast performance.
• Maintain detailed records of blasting activities, including blast logs, explosive usage, and incident reports.
• Adhere strictly to mining site safety procedures, legal requirements, and environmental regulations.
• Perform regular inspections and maintenance of blasting equipment.
• Participate in safety meetings, training, and audits related to blasting operations.
• Collaborate with mining engineers and other Technical Services personnel to optimize blast design and sequencing.
• Ability to mentor and train junior shotfirers or new team members.

Qualifications:

Essential:

• Supervisor Authorisation
• Relevant unit RIIBLA201E - Support Shotfiring operations under the Explosives Act 1999
• Experience working as a support Shotfirer in mining or quarrying environments.
• Sound knowledge of explosives, blasting techniques, and safety regulations.

Desirable:

• Experience with electronic initiation systems and blast design software
• Competency in emergency response and first aid beyond basic certification
