Closure Manager
Oaky Creek Coal — Glencore Managed Operation
Glencore’s purpose is to responsibly source the commodities that advance everyday life. At Oaky Creek Coal, we contribute to this purpose by responsibly producing and supplying high-quality export coking coal.
Our values — safety, integrity, responsibility, openness, simplicity and entrepreneurialism — guide how we work, how we lead and how we make decisions. They define what it means to be part of Glencore, regardless of role or location.
We know it is our people who make this possible. Our culture promotes teamwork, personal ownership and professionalism, and recognises individuals who bring a practical mindset, take responsibility and strive to lead in their field. We expect a lot — and we invest in people who do the same.
Oaky Creek is seeking an experienced Closure Manager to join the site senior leadership team and lead the safe, responsible and cost-effective closure of our underground operation — from rehabilitation and decommissioning through to relinquishment.
This role will suit someone who understands underground mining — someone who knows that sound outcomes are built through credibility, consistency and practical leadership in the field, not just procedures, and through genuine care for the workforce and community navigating change.
The Role
Reporting to the Site Operations Manager and positioned within the site senior leadership team, you will own and deliver the closure strategy and execution plan for Oaky Creek.
Your focus will include:
- Leading the planning and delivery of progressive rehabilitation, demolition, asset disposal and closure objectives — completed safely, efficiently and within budget, scope and schedule
- Developing, owning and driving the mine closure plan from concept phase through to successful execution while ensuring achievement to the Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP) and agreed closure relinquishment criteria
- Coordinating with operational and statutory teams on the underground aspects of closure
- Driving the site closure budgeting process and managing cost, scheduling and risk
- As a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the people dimension of the closure roadmap and ensuring the workforce is supported through transition
- Building and maintaining trusted relationships with regulators, Traditional Owners, neighbouring landholders and the community
- Maintaining a visible, credible and consistent presence across the operation
- Demonstrating an overriding commitment to health, safety and environmental responsibility by ensuring you and your team comply with Oaky Creek's and Glencore's safety and health management systems and all relevant legislation
This is a role where influence matters. Where credibility matters. Where doing it right — by our people and the land — matters most.
About You
You are an experienced mining leader who combines technical depth with sound judgement and practical application. You are comfortable challenging constructively, making decisions and holding and setting high standards — while building trust across crews, leadership teams and external stakeholders.
You will bring:
- Senior leadership experience within coal mining (underground and/or open cut).
- Demonstrated success leading mine closure, rehabilitation, decommissioning or large, complex projects in an operational environment.
- Strong project and program management capability, with a high level of business and commercial acumen.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, Australian Standards and the Queensland closure framework, including the PRCP and Financial Provisioning Scheme.
- Proven ability to engage and build positive relationships with regulators, Traditional Owners, communities and multiple stakeholders.
- A hands-on, pragmatic approach with a strong field orientation.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Environmental Science, Project Management or a related discipline (desirable).
- A current Queensland driver's licence.
- Clear communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Most importantly, you take ownership. You follow through. You focus on solutions.
