About the role:  
 
Reporting to the Senior Tailings Engineer, the Tailings Engineer is the primary site-based technical resources for operations, maintenance and surveillance and deposition of Tailings and Water Retaining Structures (TWRS). This role focuses on planning, monitoring, deposit assessments and management, advising operational leadership, and supervising field activities related to tailings systems. 
 
To be successful in this role, we require a self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, who can collaborate and excel in a technical team-based environment; someone who has a demonstrated ability to influence others, and has strong time management skills.

In this role you will:

  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies
  • Implement the surveillance, inspection, monitoring, and maintenance plan, including routine inspection and the site instrumentation
  • Maintain and update the operating, maintenance, and surveillance (OMS) manuals, along with emergency preparedness and response plans (EPRP), and other tailings and dam management system documents  
  • Develop and maintain short-range plans for tailings and water management facilities, including mass balances, tailings deposition plans, and water balances
  • Develop and maintain a site-wide tailings mass balance, and tailings deposition plans
  • Conduct monthly reconciliation of plans and ongoing mass balance analyses
  • Ensure work is in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, Standards, and guidelines
  • Ensure a Change Management Process is used appropriately
  • Report on performance and communicate with Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer and site leadership (General Manager / Engineering Manager)
  • Support project execution on site
  • Coordinate activities with Consultants, Project Engineering, Processing, Environmental, necessary Glencore corporate entities, contractors, and Government Regulators as required

Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Mining, Environmental or Geological Engineering, or equivalent
  • Minimum of four years operational, construction, or design work experience in the mining industry, including experience with tailings storage facilities
  • Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia
  • Experience with mine tailings management or water dam management preferred
  • Tailings operational experience, including dam or water management channel construction planning and execution, would be highly regarded
  • Understanding of tailings behavior, technologies, geotechnical investigation methods and analyses, soil mechanics, and surface and subsurface monitoring systems.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
