About the role:
 
Reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator and Laboratory Supervisor, Water Operations, Technical Services, Elk Valley (TSEV), the Technician, Laboratory is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of site laboratory functions, including accurate sampling, sample analysis, the recording and reporting of results following QAQC standards, daily/weekly/monthly verifications and calibrations, developing COCs, shipping and logging external samples and laboratory training for new staff.
 
To be successful, we are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, who has strong analytical, problem solving, decision-making abilities and general understand of laboratory QA/QC.

In this role you will:

  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies
  • Participate in and adhere to safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with British Columbia and federal legislation
  • Maintain lab inventory records and adhere to lab QA/QC practices
  • Able to execute and is proficient in all site internal laboratory procedures to determining the quality of plant effluent
  • Manage site samples collected and sent to external laboratories, ensuring that the current sampling plan is followed
  • Ensure that the site laboratory quality management system is followed, including procedures, standards, verifications and calibrations. 
  • Maintain lab supply inventory records, hazardous waste disposal and any incoming and outgoing shipping from the lab 
  • Execute proficiency testing 
  • Review internal data and flag data that needs to be verified or investigated further
  • When competent, be capable of training applicable personnel on laboratory procedures
  • Perform other related duties as required  

Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in Sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience  
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a laboratory environment  
  • Strong digital literacy and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite®; especially Excel  
  • Adequate understanding of general lab QA/QC and the importance of sample traceability  
  • Experience sampling and reporting of analytical results would be an asset  
  • General knowledge of water and wastewater treatment technology and processes would be an asset  
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
