The Role
Reporting to the Superintendent – Geotechnical Engineer, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer provides expert technical leadership and oversight of all geotechnical engineering activities to support safe and efficient underground mining operations. The role is integral to ensuring geotechnical risks are systematically identified, assessed and managed in alignment with the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), relevant legislation, and Glencore safety frameworks.
This position contributes significantly to mine design, ground support strategies, stope stability assessments, and overall mine sequencing. By guiding geotechnical personnel and maintaining high standards of technical governance, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer ensures ground stability is maintained across the operation and that all geotechnical processes support production, safety and business performance objectives.
In addition to technical leadership, the role plays a key part in departmental planning, data quality assurance, compliance management and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance geotechnical systems, monitoring programs and operational outcomes. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer also collaborates closely with Technical Services, Operations, Fill & Services teams and other site stakeholders to support the successful execution of the mine plan.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to Geotechnical Engineers, Graduates and Technicians.
- Ensure all geotechnical work is completed in accordance with the GCMP, relevant mining legislation and Glencore safety protocols.
- Oversee the collection, analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data to required standards.
- Provide geotechnical input into development and infrastructure design, stope design, stope sequencing and backfill strategies.
- Design and justify ground support systems where geological conditions exceed standard criteria.
- Supervise installation, monitoring and interpretation of geotechnical instrumentation.
- Conduct QA/QC on ground support systems including shotcrete, grout, cable bolts and paste backfill.
- Maintain geotechnical databases, hazard registers and monitoring systems to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Identify, assess and control geotechnical hazards to maintain acceptable risk levels.
- Investigate and record rock fall incidents in the Fall of Ground database.
- Ensure geotechnical inspections and monitoring programs are completed, recorded and reported.
- Maintain geotechnical management plans, TARPs, procedures and Standard Work Instructions.
- Ensure geotechnical databases, KPI registries and reporting systems are accurate and compliant.
- Support regulatory compliance and internal governance requirements.
- Provide geotechnical input into medium? and long?term mine planning processes.
- Support Technical Services initiatives including block model development, ground support justifications and vertical opening inspections.
- Contribute to budgeting processes and operational improvement planning.
- Coordinate personnel, training, performance reviews and development programs within the geotechnical team.
- Ensure team members correctly report incidents, near misses and corrective actions.
You will have the following skillset and attributes:
- Degree in Engineering (preferably Mining), Geology, Engineering Geology, Geomechanics or an equivalent discipline.
- Minimum 6 years of underground hard?rock mining experience, or at least 2 years underground with a total of 6 years in mining.
- Experience in mine design and geotechnical software packages such as Deswik, Leapfrog and Rocscience.
- Competent with Microsoft Office applications for analysis, reporting and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and develop Geotechnical Engineers and technical personnel.
- Experience in geotechnical block modelling, ground support design and justification, report writing, development of procedures and management plans.
- Experience in shaft stability assessments, instrumentation installation and analysis, and data management.
- Exposure to paste backfill design, testing programs and related geotechnical controls.
- Strong knowledge of rock mass classification systems and geotechnical empirical design methods.
- Strong capability in numerical modelling for stability assessments and design justification.
- Experience assessing stope stability, development design and required ground support systems.
- Familiarity with geotechnical monitoring systems, instrumentation and interpretation of monitoring data.
- Knowledge of relevant mining legislation, geotechnical compliance requirements and statutory frameworks.
- Excellent communication, reporting and stakeholder engagement skills across operational and technical teams.
- Strong analytical and problem?solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to drive continuous improvement and contribute to operational efficiency and technical services initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Technical Services, Operations, Fill & Services and site management.
