About the role
Reporting directly to the Senior Mechanical Engineer, this residential role is based in Townsville and supports both Copper Refineries Pty Ltd and Glencore Port Operations. The Mechanical Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of mechanical assets across the refinery and port environments.
You will work closely with operations, maintenance, and frontline leadership teams to provide day to day mechanical engineering support, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and deliver capital and operating projects that enhance safety, reliability and performance. This role provides broad exposure to fixed plant, materials handling, port infrastructure and refinery assets, offering strong technical development opportunities within a complex industrial setting.
A strong safety focus is essential, with the role actively contributing to hazard identification, risk management, and the embedding of safe work practices across engineering and maintenance activities.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide mechanical engineering support to production and maintenance teams to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of plant and port assets
- Support the planning, execution and delivery of operating and capital projects, ensuring compliance with scope, budget, schedule and safety requirements
- Undertake engineering investigations, problem solving and root cause analysis to address equipment reliability, performance and safety issues
- Prepare and review engineering documentation, including scopes of work, technical specifications, drawings, calculations and work packs
- Provide technical oversight and supervision of engineering activities, contractors and service providers on site
- Support asset management activities, including maintenance strategies, life cycle planning and reliability improvements
- Ensure mechanical designs and modifications comply with statutory requirements, Australian Standards and Glencore engineering standards
- Contribute to risk assessments, change management (MoC) and safety in design processes
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated engineering outcomes
About You
You are a motivated and practical Mechanical Engineer who enjoys working in an operational environment and partnering closely with site teams. You are comfortable balancing technical rigour with real world execution and understand the importance of safety, reliability and stakeholder collaboration in heavy industry.
You take ownership of your work, communicate clearly with both technical and non technical stakeholders, and apply sound engineering judgement to deliver practical and compliant solutions. You value continuous improvement and are keen to build your experience within a high performing, multidisciplinary engineering team.
You will bring:
- An Australian recognised Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or Structural / Civil Engineering with strong mechanical experience)
- 2–5 years’ experience in a relevant industry such as resources, processing, manufacturing, ports or heavy industry
- Experience supporting operating environments, including maintenance and production interfaces
- Exposure to project delivery and asset management, including planning, execution and contractor coordination
- Demonstrated ability to provide onsite engineering supervision and leadership
- Strong organisational, planning and time management skills
- A manual C class driver’s licence
- Experience using SAP or similar maintenance/asset management systems (desirable)
- A practical, mechanically minded approach with strong problem solving capability
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, maintenance and operations teams
