Mount Isa Mines are currently advertising for a Cadet Surveyor vacancy that exists in the Technical Services team.   This role is residentially based in Mount Isa, working a 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off – 9 hour shift. We encourage suitably qualified and experienced local candidates to apply. For those candidates located outside of Mount Isa, relocation support is available for this position to enable you and your family to live and work in Mount Isa.

About the role

 

This position reports to the Lead Surveyor provides an opportunity to build foundational knowledge and practical experience in mine surveying, spatial data management and underground mining operations. Working closely with the Survey and Technical Services teams, the role will support day-to-day survey activities while developing technical capability through hands-on experience, structured training and rotations across the Technical Services department. The position plays an important role in maintaining accurate survey information that supports mine planning, operational execution and reconciliation, while providing a strong pathway for professional development within the mining industry.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist Surveyors with underground survey activities including pickups, control installation and survey data collection.
  • Process and maintain accurate survey data within CAD systems, survey databases and other relevant systems.
  • Assist with void surveys, check surveys, level traversing, stockpile surveys and development pickups.
  • Support the preparation and distribution of survey plans, reports, memos and statutory documentation.
  • Participate in underground inspections and Technical Services rotations to develop broader operational knowledge.
  • Maintain compliance with site safety requirements and training obligations while actively developing surveying skills and knowledge.

 

Required Experience

 

The successful candidate will ideally have some previous exposure to a mining environment or the resources industry, together with a basic understanding of surveying principles and spatial data management. Exposure to survey software or CAD systems would be advantageous. This is an entry-level development opportunity, so a strong willingness to learn, develop technical capability and build a career within the mining industry is essential. The candidate should also demonstrate an ability to work effectively within a team, follow instructions, manage tasks and deadlines, and apply analytical and problem-solving skills.

 

Qualifications and skills needed:

  • Currently studying a Surveying degree, Associate Degree or equivalent recognised by the Survey Board Queensland (SBQ).
  • Completion of the Glencore School Leaver Program. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and mine survey software (Deswik preferred; similar systems also suitable)
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles and spatial data management.
  • Exposure to survey software and CAD systems is advantageous.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical thinking.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop within the mining industry.
  • Ability to follow instructions, manage tasks and meet deadlines with guidance.
  • Strong commitment to safety and professional development.
