Main Objectives of the Position
Reporting to the Legal Manager, the Legal Superintendent is responsible for supervising legal activities at Mutanda Mining, providing legal advice to management and operational teams, and protecting the company’s interests through effective contract management, litigation oversight and regulatory compliance.
The role provides particular support to the Projects Department in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and managing contractual documents. The Legal Superintendent also supervises Legal Advisors, coordinates with external counsel and supports engagement with public authorities to ensure that company activities comply with applicable laws, regulations and internal policies.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law.
- Qualification in International Law.
- Additional studies in Management or Business would be an advantage.
- Good command of English and French, both written and spoken.
- Fluency in Swahili would be an advantage.
Required Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in litigation and related legal matters.
- Significant experience in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and managing commercial contracts.
- Experience in the mining industry, in a similar role, or within the legal department of a large private company.
- Experience coordinating legal proceedings and working with external lawyers and legal advisors.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing systems and procedures.
- Extensive experience in risk assessments and audit processes.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Supervise site-based legal activities and provide legal advice to management, employees and operational departments.
- Lead, coach and develop Legal Advisors, ensuring the quality and timely delivery of legal support.
- Draft, review, negotiate and manage contracts, agreements and other legal documents, particularly in support of the Projects Department.
- Ensure that contractual documents comply with applicable laws, regulatory requirements and internal company policies.
- Identify legal and contractual risks and recommend appropriate measures to protect MUMI’s interests.
- Manage and monitor litigation and legal proceedings, coordinate with external counsel and maintain an up-to-date litigation register.
- Support the prevention and resolution of project-related disputes.
- Support the management and follow-up of matters involving Congolese public authorities, including tax, labour, mining, customs, transport and environmental administrations.
- Conduct legal research, prepare legal opinions and monitor legislative developments affecting the company.
- Develop and review internal policies, procedures and compliance systems to support lawful business operations.
- Collaborate with operational, Human Resources and Finance teams to integrate legal requirements into business decisions and processes.
- Work with Health, Safety and Environment teams to support legal compliance across operational activities.
- Oversee the legal aspects of health, safety and environmental incident investigations, ensuring appropriate documentation and recommendations for corrective action.
- Support procedures for reporting and managing waste-related incidents and assess their legal implications.
- Contribute to environmental governance frameworks, policies and compliance programmes.
- Review environmental clauses in contracts, permits and agreements, and support environmental due diligence for projects, acquisitions and business operations.
- Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility and participate in relevant HSE committees and initiatives.
- Comply with Glencore’s environmental procedures and MUMI SARL’s environmental policy.
