Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

Job Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Managing Director, the incumbent will be responsible for defining, driving, and ensuring the implementation of the HSE strategy for the mining site (copper and cobalt), in alignment with Group standards and regulatory requirements. They will ensure major risk governance, legal compliance, and operational excellence of HSE systems to support safe and reliable production. The position holder will foster a strong safety culture and responsible environmental management integrated into daily operations. They will ensure the anticipation of emerging risks and the effectiveness of critical controls. Finally, they will support operational leadership in the continuous improvement of HSE and sustainability performance.

 

The incumbent will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

•    Define and deploy the site's HSE strategy: Define the HSE strategy aligned with Group requirements and operational priorities; this includes developing measurable work plans, integrating biodiversity issues, water management, atmospheric emissions, decarbonization, and responsible production, as well as tracking performance indicators to ensure disciplined and effective implementation.


•    Ensure major risk governance and critical controls: Establish and maintain a robust material risk management system; this includes identifying major hazards, designing and verifying critical controls, utilizing methodologies such as HAZOP and ICAM, and anticipating emerging risks before a serious incident occurs. 


•    Guarantee regulatory and normative compliance: Ensure compliance with national legislation and international standards (ICMM, IFC, Copper Mark, etc.); this includes preparing and coordinating regulatory inspections, internal and external audits, and continuously updating HSE procedures based on legal developments and company directives.


•    Strengthen safety culture and visible leadership: Develop and promote a strong safety culture at all levels of the organization; this includes implementing visible leadership initiatives, strengthening managerial accountability, improving the effectiveness of critical controls, and supervising high-risk activities, including those of contractors.


•    Supervise incident management and investigations: Ensure rigorous management of incidents and near-misses; this includes supervising reporting, conducting or validating in-depth investigations, identifying systemic root causes, managing corrective action plans, and sharing lessons learned to prevent recurrence.

 
•    Drive emergency and crisis preparedness and management: Establish and continuously improve emergency preparedness mechanisms; this includes developing and testing response plans, coordinating response teams, strengthening response capacities for high-impact scenarios, and ensuring organizational resilience.  


•    Support operations and develop organizational capabilities: Support COOs and operational managers in integrating HSE systems into daily activities; this includes coaching leaders, implementing targeted training programs, developing internal skills, and promoting workplace well-being, including injury management and return-to-work programs.  


•    Leverage data and technologies for HSE performance: Utilize digital tools and leading indicators to improve performance; this includes analyzing HSE data, producing accurate and influential reports for Management, and using predictive analytics to guide strategic decisions.  


•    Manage internal and external stakeholders: Ensure effective communication with stakeholders; this includes collaborating with the Executive Committee, GMs, Mining and Processing teams, Corporate, local authorities, regulators, and neighboring mining operations through strategic meetings, HSE committees, audits, inspections, formal reports, workshops, and crisis communications.

Qualifications and Experience

 

•    Hold a bachelor’s degree (Graduat or a National Higher Diploma) in Health, Safety and Environment, Risk Management, or equivalent.  
•    Have a minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in HSE leadership roles.  
•    Have at least 7 years of experience in the mining and mineral processing industry.  
•    Proven experience in major risk management and high-risk environments, underground mining, emergency management, and health services is an asset. 


Technical Skills

 

•    Develop and execute an HSE strategy aligned with business objectives. 
•    Master major risk management and critical controls. 
•    Conduct HAZOP analyses and ICAM investigations. 
•    Interpret and utilize leading indicators and digital HSE systems. 
•    Drive audits and ensure regulatory compliance. 
•    Manage crisis situations and coordinate emergency responses. 
•    Translate technical concepts into concrete operational solutions.
