Superintendent - Geotechnical Design & Data Collection

Reporting to the Geotechnical and Hydrogeology Manager, the Geotechnical Superintendent – Design & Data Collection is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of geotechnical engineering studies and design activities supporting KCC's open-pit mining operations.

The incumbent oversees geotechnical design, field data collection, monitoring, analysis, interpretation, and technical reporting to ensure that geotechnical risks are properly identified, assessed, communicated, and effectively managed.

The Geotechnical Superintendent is also responsible for identifying, planning, and coordinating geotechnical studies and design activities for both operational requirements and the Life of Mine (LoM) plan. In this capacity, the role ensures that geotechnical considerations are integrated into mine planning, slope design, depressurization strategies, risk management, and operational decision-making to support safe and sustainable mining operations.

The incumbent will be responsible for, among other duties, the following (non-exhaustive): 

• • Health, Safety, Environment, Community & Risk Management 

• • Promote a strong health and safety culture by leading by example and encouraging safe work practices and excellence in housekeeping.
  • Ensure that standard operating procedures and safe systems of work are implemented within the area of responsibility; verify that personnel are trained, equipped, and competent to perform their duties while enforcing compliance.
  • Manage contractor safety and promote contractor engagement in safety within the area of responsibility.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety protocols for all drilling programmes.
  • Investigate safety incidents, analyse root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Promptly address and close out audit actions within the area of accountability.

• • Budget, Cost & Governance 

• • Actively manage budgets, forecasts, costs, and performance objectives within the area of responsibility while clearly communicating expectations to the team.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities.
  • Manage contractors in accordance with company policies and procedures relating to contractor management, procurement, and invoicing.
  • Conduct all business activities in strict compliance with the Company's Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery, Anti-Corruption, and Fraud Prevention policies.

• • People Management, Development & Communication 

• • Train and develop personnel in geotechnical competencies.
  • Communicate effectively with mine management.
  • Demonstrate the highest professional standards and actively promote the Company's values.
  • Act as a role model, mentor, and coach to team members.
  • Establish and communicate clear expectations, responsibilities, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Translate business priorities into daily operational activities to ensure the team understands how their work contributes to business success.

• • Planning & Scheduling 

• • Support the execution of drilling budgets, schedules, and work plans.
  • Ensure that all activities within the area of responsibility are effectively planned and scheduled to achieve the mine plan.
  • Collaborate with mine planning teams to apply a risk-based, data-driven approach for continuous improvement and optimization of Life of Mine (LoM) designs and plans, including evaluating the effectiveness of deployed technologies and resources.

• • Operational & Technical Excellence 

• • Ensure compliance with geotechnical data collection procedures, risk assessments, and geotechnical hazard communication processes.
  • Determine slope design parameters, including intact rock properties, rock mass characteristics, pore pressure, and related geotechnical inputs.
  • Utilize specialized methods and software to evaluate and design stable open-pit slopes.
  • Integrate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies into mine analyses and designs.
  • Conduct slope optimization studies.
  • Provide technical support to regional and global geotechnical teams for medium- and long-term projects.
  • Participate in planning geotechnical drilling programmes, sampling campaigns, and laboratory testing.
  • Use information provided by coordinators to update geotechnical hazard maps.
  • Prepare or contribute to the monthly geotechnical report.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians on geotechnical monitoring systems and ensure that Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) are updated and effectively implemented.
  • Communicate changes relating to CHMP critical controls and apply the Management of Change (MoC) procedure where required.
  • Ensure the geotechnical team is represented at all mine planning and production meetings.
  • Support the development and training of national employees to obtain internationally recognized professional qualifications.

Job Requirements 

Qualifications & Experience 

• Minimum of seven (7) years' experience in open-pit mining within a geotechnical engineering department.
• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
• Demonstrated technical expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: Geotechnical Engineering and/or Hydrogeology.
• Strong modelling skills are essential, including proficiency with the Rocscience software suite (minimum requirement).
• Proven experience using mine design software packages.
• Demonstrated experience in geotechnical data collection methods, data analysis and interpretation, and open-pit mine design.
