Location: Sudbury, ON – onsite, work location is not accessible by public transportation.

Full-time, staff position.

Range of Pay: $75,000 to $95,000 including base salary and variable compensation. 

XPS (Glencore Canada) is a licensed metallurgical engineering, technology and test services consulting business offering industry leading expertise in orebody characterization, flowsheet development, operational support, process control, growth initiatives and asset integrity management for most commodities including gold, nickel, copper, zinc, PGEs, rare earths and industrial minerals.

We are currently seeking a Materials Intern (EIT) to join our skilled Materials Technology Group.  Our team of expert materials engineers based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada is dedicated to enhancing the reliability of critical equipment by implementing proven materials practices at key stages of design, procurement, and operation. We also leverage the expertise of our XPS partners in process control, extractive metallurgy, and process mineralogy to complement our skills and deliver comprehensive support.

The group is well equipped to address needs through on-site plant support, design engineering and laboratory materials testing and root cause failure analysis.  We can reduce risk and add value to our client’s project or operation through:

  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control in Equipment Fabrication
  • Equipment Integrity Assessment
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
  • Materials Selection
  • Materials Testing for Corrosion and Wear
  • Equipment Fabrication Specifications

Responsibilities & Accountabilities
The primary functions of the Materials Intern (EIT) are:

  • On-site inspection and evaluation of in-service plant equipment, including confined space entry
  • QAQC on new equipment during fabrication or existing equipment repairs
  • Assist in repair designs of plant equipment in areas of welding, masonry, coating, non-metals
  • Support laboratory testing; materials for corrosion, wear and structural applications
  • Support laboratory RCFA projects
  • Project coordination and management
  • A commitment to safety and sustainability
  • Provide support to senior engineers, must be willing to participate in projects worldwide
  • Professional development and safety training

 Education/Experience/Skills
The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelor or Graduate degree or specialization in materials or metallurgical engineering
  • Previous work or academic experience with root cause failure analysis
  • Understanding and exposure to base metals flowsheets
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally ~ 30%
  • Ability to work inside confined spaces and wear applicable personal protective equipment
  • Project management skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic team
  • An entrepreneurial spirit
  • Excellent problem solving, time management and analytical skills with keen attention to detail
  • Client focused
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite or equivalent products
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • French and English language skills required
  • Eligibility for P.Eng. is necessary
