Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

Job description

 

 

Reporting to the General Manager of Socio-Economic Development, the incumbent will be responsible for leading sustainable and transparent social performance management to enable KCC to meet its social commitments as a responsible mining operator. They will ensure that social impacts are managed responsibly, in accordance with international standards and principles (UNGP, ICMM, ILO, IFC, etc.), while maximizing benefits for communities.

 


He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

 

1.    Regulatory compliance, governance and risk management:

 

•    Develop an effective community development strategy and management plan, aligned with national legislation, development priorities, KCC's business and social performance strategy, and sustainability objectives.
•    Collaborating with key departments to ensure that all social and human rights risks are systematically identified, assessed and integrated into KCC’s overall risk profile, with robust control mechanisms.
•    Ensure grievance management by leading the implementation of the asset-level complaints management mechanism, in accordance with the effectiveness criteria of the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGP), in order to make it a transparent, accessible and reliable platform for addressing community concerns.

•     Lead audit and assurance missions (internal and external) and ensure that findings are properly documented and processed in accordance with international standards.
•    Develop mitigation plans and early warning systems based on community perceptions and stakeholder feedback.
•    Ensure accurate and timely reporting to internal stakeholders, regulatory authorities, executive management and external stakeholders.

 

2.    Project management and implementation:

 

•    Implement mandatory and discretionary social development projects, ensuring that initiatives are completed on time, within scope and budget, in order to generate sustainable benefits for host communities (education, health, livelihoods, infrastructure, etc.).
•    Manage consultants and implementation partners, while ensuring the application of project security and quality control procedures to guarantee performance accountability.
•    Ensure the monitoring and reporting of results, impact and social return on investment (SROI) of social projects.

 

3.    Leadership and capacity building:

 

•    Oversee all functions of the community development team, including budget management, planning and performance.
•    Optimize internal systems and processes to promote data-driven management and decision-making.
•    Promote a culture of responsibility, ethics and impact-oriented performance within the team.

•    Represent the function during internal and external engagements, ensuring the integration of considerations related to social performance and human rights into strategic decision-making.

 

4.    Stakeholder engagement and partnerships:

 

•    Establish and maintain strong relationships with local communities, government authorities, NGOs, traditional leaders, development agencies and public institutions.

•       Lead structured stakeholder engagement processes by facilitating regular meetings, public consultations, and other forms of community engagement related to operational needs.

•        Ensure transparent communication, both internally and externally.

•        Ensure the effective implementation of complaint management and conflict resolution mechanisms.

•    Ensure the effective application of incident management processes as well as the implementation of necessary preventive and/or corrective actions.
•    Support the design, planning and implementation of cross-functional projects within the socio-economic development function and other departments of the company (e.g. ASM, local content, environment, etc.).
•    Identify and leverage co-financing and collaboration opportunities to maximize the impact of initiatives.

 


Job requirements 

 

Qualifications and experience

 

•    Hold a university degree in social sciences, development studies, public policy, engineering sciences or a related field.
•    Having an internationally recognized project management certification (PMP, PRINCE2 or equivalent) would be an asset.
•    Candidates must have 10 to 15 years of professional experience in the mining or extractive industry.

•    Demonstrate proven experience in the design, implementation and monitoring of socio-economic development programs.
•    Demonstrate experience in developing and implementing community consultation plans, including grievance management.
•    Demonstrate experience in delivering community infrastructure projects and social impact programs that meet international standards.

•    Demonstrate experience in conducting third-party audit and assurance activities in accordance with international standards.
•    Mastering the consultation, design and implementation processes related to land acquisition, relocation and resettlement.

•    Mastering the consultation, design and implementation processes related to artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
•    Mastering the processes of consultation, design and implementation of engineering or construction projects.
•    Having international professional experience would be an asset.

 

Technical skills.

 

•    Demonstrate strong general management skills, including communication and interpersonal skills, data analysis, information management, reporting, and budget preparation and management.
•    Demonstrate strategic vision and leadership, with a good knowledge and understanding of international standards and principles (UNGP, ICMM, ILO, IFC).

•  Effectively manage stakeholder engagement and exert positive influence in complex socio-economic, political and environmental environments, while maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

•   Develop and implement risk management and project delivery mechanisms, including social impact and risk assessments, human rights due diligence, complaints and grievance management mechanisms, incident management, and documentation of commitments and obligations.
•    Resolving conflicts and conducting negotiations related to social performance and human rights, including in crisis contexts.
•    Design and develop new teams, processes and systems, while ensuring effective management of people and performance.

•    Proficiency in French, Swahili and English, both spoken and written.
