Job Description 

 

 

Reporting to the Hydrogeology Superintendent, the Senior Technical Advisor – OpenPit Hydrogeology (M/F) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective implementation of mine hydrogeology solutions, data analysis, and the delivery of small-scale projects aimed at managing risks and promoting excellence in open-pit mine production and development.

 

The Senior Technical Advisor – Hydrogeology provides essential support to open-pit operational and technical teams by ensuring that resources, capabilities, and competencies are aligned with work plans. This role involves delivering operational support through monitoring, inspections, and coordination of hydrogeological studies to drive continuous improvement in practices. He/she also performs hydrogeological analyses to ensure the stability of mining methods while contributing to initiatives focused on safe production, value creation, and cost reduction.

 

In addition, the Senior Technical Advisor oversees reporting and documentation of hydrogeological performance, identifies and analyzes deviations from plans and processes, and recommends necessary corrective actions. He/she leads and monitors continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, operability, reliability, value optimization, and cost efficiency. The role also promotes knowledge transfer and capability building, with a strong emphasis on developing team members and collaborators.

 

In this key role, the Senior Technical Advisor actively contributes to improving overall mine performance while promoting a culture of safety and excellence.

 

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following responsabilities (non-exhaustives) :  

 

 

  • Provide key technical support to mining operations for planning surface water drainage within and around the open pit and associated infrastructure (location and sizing of sumps, drains, culverts, and berms)
  • Develop short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for surface water management and collaborate with operations and planning teams for implementation
  • Monitor, evaluate, and critically assess the effectiveness of existing and planned surface water management infrastructure
  • Establish and maintain a monitoring network to collect critical data on surface water flows and levels (rivers, sumps, culverts, etc.)
  • Develop data collection strategies to continuously improve the conceptual hydrological model with high accuracy and relevance
  • Support the Senior Hydrogeologist in analyzing the impact of surface water on open-pit slope stability
  • Work closely with various departments to support Mining, Environmental, and Project teams on water-related studies and challenges
  • Manage stormwater drainage within the open pit and plan necessary system adjustments as mining progresses
  • Collaborate with consultants providing technical support in hydrological modeling and stormwater management
  • Identify cost optimization opportunities and procedural improvements in drainage management and actively promote continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide key technical support for planning open-pit dewatering systems
  • Develop short-, medium-, and long-term dewatering strategies and support their implementation with operations and planning teams
  • Establish and maintain monitoring networks to collect critical groundwater data (flow rates, levels, pressures)
  • Develop data collection strategies to continuously improve hydrogeological models (conceptual and numerical) with high accuracy and relevance
  • Critically review and interpret numerical models provided by consultants and run simulations/scenarios
  • Develop the capabilities of national hydrogeology staff and implement formal and informal training programs to strengthen technical skills

 

 

Job Requirements 

 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

 

 

  • University degree in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, mining engineering, or civil engineering from a recognized institution
  • Proven ability to mentor, train, and develop a hydrogeology team
  • Strong technical expertise and ability to provide operational support in open-pit hydrogeological engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mine hydrogeology, with international exposure in hard rock metalliferous mining

 

 

Technical Skills 

 

 

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and creative problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into practical and operational solutions
  • Good knowledge of best practices in safe open-pit mining production engineering
  • International work experience is an advantage
