Main Objectives of the Position
Reporting to the Mining Manager, the Dewatering Superintendent is responsible for managing all aspects of open pit dewatering operations at Mutanda Mining. This includes in-pit and ex-pit pumping systems, freshwater supply to site users, and the development of workforce capabilities.
The role ensures effective water level control to maintain safe mining operations, protect pit wall stability, and support uninterrupted production. The Superintendent also oversees maintenance planning for dewatering infrastructure, provides technical guidance, manages operational risks, and drives continuous improvement in water management efficiency.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering (preferred)
Valid international driving license
Strong proficiency in English (written and spoken)
Good working knowledge of French is an advantage
Required Experience
Minimum of 8 years’ experience in mining operations or mining services
At least 3 years in a management role
Experience managing operational teams on shift
Experience with diesel and electrical pumps, as well as HDPE piping systems
Previous experience in mine dewatering operations is highly desirable
Experience in developing systems, procedures, and policies
Required Skills
Strong leadership and people management skills
Ability to coach, mentor and develop teams
Good understanding of mining and maintenance operations
Ability to read and interpret mine plans
Strong communication and cross-cultural skills
Computer literacy (MS Office)
Strong commitment to safety and compliance
Key Responsibilities
Develop and manage dewatering systems across all pits
Ensure availability and maintenance of pumps and infrastructure
Supervise installation of boreholes and piping systems
Monitor water levels and ensure compliance with operational and environmental standards
Report dewatering performance and risks
Align dewatering strategy with mine planning requirements
Coordinate with Maintenance and Hydrogeology teams
Identify risks and constraints impacting mine production
Drive continuous improvement and efficiency
Forecast and manage pumps, piping, and consumables
Maintain accurate inventory and usage records
Monitor costs and support optimization initiatives
- Ensure adequate water supply (quantity and quality) across site operations
- Review and improve dewatering procedures in line with best practices
Manage contractors and suppliers
Ensure quality, compliance, and cost control
- Comply with Glencore’s environmental procedures and MUMI SARL’s environmental policy.
