Department/Division: Copper Africa - Technical Services
Location: Johannesburg – South Africa
Qualifications /Skills
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy or a related field; a Master’s or PhD is preferred.
- Experience: Over 10 years of experience in a studies / project management role within the mining industry, demonstrating a proven track record in study management and technical study delivery for both underground and open-pit operations, including copper and cobalt processing as a minimum.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in modelling software, preferably with expertise in Metsim or similar packages. Experience or familiarity with geological software packages (Datamine, Leapfrog etc.) and understanding of geological databases.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong metallurgical and study management skills, with a solid understanding of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy unit operations (including roasting), especially in the base metal industry.
- Problem-Solving Ability: A solutions-oriented mindset with excellent problem-solving skills, capable of addressing complex challenges.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional report writing and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concept studies and portfolio analysis to diverse audiences
Key Responsibilities
Process & Plant Design
- Develop process treatment routes from drill-core associated with new deposits.
- Translate metallurgical interpretation of the orebody into conceptual treatment plant designs and engineering standards.
- Design systems relevant to the role and manage multiple processes simultaneously across the region.
Business Development & Improvements
- Identify and assess potential improvements and new business opportunities.
- Define appropriate development plants, metallurgical test-work plans, process designs and engineering standards for project development phases.
- Allocate resources with internal functions to deliver project objectives in support of the Business Plan.
Study Management
- Play a key role in developing and controlling study phases and outcomes (conceptual to pre-feasibility).
- Manage project interfaces on behalf of operations and/or introduce systems and processes to improve efficiency and outcome of process design.
- Develop and maintain a capable and efficient internal/external team to deliver study workplans.
Technical Support & Assurance
- Assist in internal technical and toll-gate reviews for operations and projects, ensuring adherence to technical and metallurgical standards.
- Deliver level-two assurance to mining and exploration projects, ensuring compliance with standards and practices.
- Support technical evaluations and due diligence reviews for investment opportunities, providing insights into geological and metallurgical risks and opportunities.
Training, Mentorship & Guidance
- Provide training, mentoring and support to mine geologists and process engineers across operations, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
- Advise operational sites on appropriate data collection techniques and methods to enhance geological understanding and data quality.
Technology Implementation
- Investigate and implement new mining, exploration and processing technologies to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness

- Travel Commitment: Frequent travel to the DRC.
