Geologist - Grade Control Drilling
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.
As an industrial mining company, we provide safe workplaces and support the sustainable development of the local economy. We maintain a constructive and open dialogue with the communities that host us, as well as with the provincial and national government.
Under the direct supervision of the Grade Control and Reconciliation Superintendent., the incumbent will be responsible for the planning, management and coordination of surface grade control drilling activities at an open pit mine (copper and cobalt). He/she will ensure the accurate collection of geological data through efficient drilling practices, in compliance with safety, quality and environmental standards. In collaboration with the geology teams, drillers and operational staff, he/she will contribute to optimizing ore recovery and improving resource modelling. This strategic position directly supports reliable resource estimates and operational performance.
He/She will have, among others, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):
- Plan and implement grade control drilling campaigns. This includes designing surface drilling plans based on geological and operational priorities, defining targets to be drilled, selecting appropriate drilling methods (including CR), and coordinating with relevant teams to ensure timely execution. It is also about ensuring that plans are aligned with resource estimation and mining optimization objectives.
- Supervise daily drilling operations. This includes managing drilling crews, monitoring drilling progress in the field, assessing compliance with established plans, and enforcing safety and quality standards. It is the responsibility of the coordinator to ensure that drilling activities are carried out efficiently, in compliance with costs, time and HSE standards.
- Define and apply effective sampling methodologies. This includes the development and implementation of robust sampling protocols to ensure the representativeness of the samples collected and to minimize contamination or losses. It also involves training technicians on best practices in sample handling and preparation.
- Monitor borehole performance and improve efficiency. This includes analyzing performance indicators (burn-in rate, recovery, downtime), identifying deviations, and implementing corrective actions. The coordinator will also have to propose innovations or technical adjustments in order to optimize the yields and quality of the data collected.
- Perform regular QA/QC checks on drill samples. This includes implementing quality controls throughout the drilling and sampling process, verifying data consistency, and investigating anomalies. The goal is to ensure the integrity of the data used for resource modeling and mine planning.
- Manage relationships with drilling subcontractors. This includes coordinating the activities of outsourced drilling crews, contract monitoring, verifying performance, and ensuring that their operations meet the company's safety, quality, and production standards.
- Write and analyze technical drilling reports. This includes regular reporting detailing drilling progress, incidents, QA/QC results, equipment or personnel requirements, as well as recommendations for future campaigns. These reports must support the strategic decisions of the geological team and the technical management.
- Train and mentor technical staff. This includes mentoring geologist assistants, technicians, and new employees on best practices in drilling, sampling, safety, and the use of monitoring tools. It is also a question of developing the skills of the teams to strengthen their autonomy and performance.
- Ensure compliance with HSE and environmental standards. This includes integrating HSE policies into all stages of the drilling process, conducting safety audits, proactive risk management and continuous communication with the HSE and Environment departments to ensure compliance with legal and internal requirements.
- Collaborate with the geology, planning and environment departments. This includes participating in planning meetings, coordinating with geologists for prioritization of drilling targets, synchronizing with mining operations, and consulting with environmental teams to limit the ecological impacts of drilling.
