Mount Isa Mines are currently advertising for a Geotechnical Technician vacancy that exists in the George Fisher Mine, Technical Services team. This role is residentially based in Mount Isa, working a 5/2 4/3, 9 hour roster. We encourage suitably qualified and experienced local candidates to apply. For those candidates located outside of Mount Isa, relocation support is available for this position to enable you and your family to live and work in Mount Isa.

About the role
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Technician supports the Geotechnical Engineering team through the collection, monitoring and interpretation of geotechnical data across underground and surface operations. The role plays a key part in managing ground stability risks by assisting with monitoring programs, ground support QA/QC, instrumentation installation, pastefill testing and blast monitoring. All work is delivered in accordance with the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), site safety standards and legislative requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- Collect, interpret and record geotechnical monitoring data across underground and surface areas.
- Maintain geotechnical databases and ensure monitoring records remain accurate and up to date.
- Install, monitor and maintain geotechnical instrumentation systems.
- Conduct surveys of vertical openings and assist with data processing and reporting.
- Conduct QA/QC inspections of bolts, cables, mesh and shotcrete installations.
- Audit ground support installation and testing programs for compliance with standards.
- Perform pull testing and verification testing of ground support systems.
- Conduct QA/QC inspections of pastefill placement underground.
- Perform paste testing and strength verification in the laboratory.
- Ensure paste test results are captured and communicated to engineering teams.
- Conduct blast vibration monitoring and record results.
- Communicate effectively with operational and technical personnel.
About you – skills and experience:
You will bring
- Experience in underground or surface mining environments (desirable).
- Technical qualification in mining, geology, geotechnical monitoring or a related field (advantageous).
- Experience with geotechnical monitoring systems and instrumentation.
- Understanding of ground support systems and installation practices.
- Experience with blast vibration monitoring and Drill & Blast QA/QC.
- Ability to conduct inspections, testing and monitoring activities.
- Ability to maintain in maintaining technical databases and accurate geotechnical records.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
- Solid safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work with operations, technical teams and suppliers.
- High attention to detail in reporting and data entry.
- Ability to manage one’s own tasks and prioritize competing demands in field environments.
- Teamwork, collaboration and proactive identification of improvement opportunities.
