Mount Isa Mines are currently seeking an experienced Manual Scaler for within the George Fisher Operations Team. This position is residentially based in Mount Isa whilst working a 7 on 7 off – day shift only roster. This multi-task role is suited to someone who is flexible, enjoys a challenge and ensures safe work practices throughout their workday. 

The Role
The Underground Scaling Operator is responsible for manually removing loose or unstable rock from underground mine backs, walls, and faces using handheld scaling bars. This role is critical for maintaining safe ground conditions and preventing rockfalls in development and production areas. Additional responsibilities include assisting with QAQC of installed ground support, including but not limited to pull testing. The roster for this role is on a day shift only, 7 on 7 off rotating roster.

Key responsibilities will also include:
  • Conducting manual scaling using handheld scaling bars to remove loose or unsafe rock in line with weekly and monthly scaling schedules
  • Inspect ground conditions in work areas and travel ways to identify hazards such as cracks, wedges, slabs and loose material
  • Perform Stop Look Assess Manage (SLAMs) assessments prior to conducting scaling operations
  • Communicate unsafe ground conditions to supervisors and geotechnical engineering department through pre-determined process
  • Follow all ground control plans, geotechnical engineering guidance and safe work procedures
  • Ensure scaling work areas are appropriately signed and barricaded in line with operating procedures
  • Clean and secure the work area once scaling is complete
  • Record scaling activities and submit to the database for geotechnical review - monitor ground conditions and report hazards using the Geotech hazard Report Form
  • Assist geotechnical engineers and specialists to conduct pull tests on installed ground support (including resin bolts, split sets, cable bolts) to verify installation quality and compliance
  • Assist with set up and operation of pull-testing equipment 
The ideal applicant should possess:
  • Drivers License
  • Manitou / IT with manbasket 
  • Experience in manual scaling in an underground environment
  • A pro-active attitude towards safety and a desire to ensure the highest standards are maintained
  • A good attendance and safety record:
