The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Smelter Process Technician to join our Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations in Greater Sudbury, Ontario.
The position will be based in Falconbridge, Greater Sudbury, Ontario.
This is a full-time, contract, unionized position.
Rate of Pay: $45.14 hourly plus applicable bonuses.
This position is being posted to fill an existing vacancy.
Work location is not accessible by public transportation.
Duties and Accountabilities:
- Leads, organizes, co-ordinates and performs test work, sampling and monitoring of Smelter production processes and equipment.
- Organizes and co-ordinates work done by teams responsible for start-up and commissioning of new equipment.
- Organizes, co-ordinates and performs laboratory tests and operates laboratory tests and operates laboratory equipment.
- Ensures that all the vessel, ladle, tundish and refactory integrity programmes are maintained, timely reported and any critical issues immediately followed up and reported.
- Participates in formalizing recommendations for changes/improvements to increase Smelter efficiency.
- Assists with inter-departmental training and indoctrination of new recruits/technicians as well as supporting the training department with relevant technical input. This would specifically refer to refractory management and integrity programs.

Education and Skills
The incumbent must have a community college diploma in a three-year metallurgical or chemical engineering technology program or acceptable equivalent studies and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of theory and practice in the various areas of Smelter metallurgical technology: Fluid Bed Roasting, Electric Furnace Smelting, Nickel/Copper Converting, and Acid Plant Operation.
The completion of the Smelter Process Awareness course offered through Cambrian College would be of benefit.
The incumbent must also have a general knowledge of refractories in terms of its application, chemical composition and characteristics. A JIT certificate would be benefit. Ability to organize, prioritize, coordinate, and lead investigations in the Smelter using continuous improvement methods.
